to buy your airtickets to Sri Lanka or anywhere for that matter. Traditionally,
travellers turned to travel agents who are still good sources, but more and
more people are turning to the internet. The usual ways that airline
tickets can be purchased are

Travel Agents are of
course only as good as the staff they employ. Saturday staff are usually
trainees of the "school-leaver" type. Having said that if you find the right
high street travel agent and the right member of staff, who is prepared to work
through her lunch hour, then you might be on to a winner....

As general rule you are
unlikely to get a bargain by going to the airline itself. Airlines sell tickets
at marked down prices ("pleeze buy my tickets") to consolidators but under
international rules of fair competition have to advertise them at a pre-agreed
price to the travelling public. They can't sell them at discounted prices!
Unless you know better....Forget It!

Shops"

Lisa!...
The so-called Bucket Shops have come a long way
since the 1980's! In fact it is almost rude to refer to them as such these days
and the correct terminology is "Consolidators". They buy cheap tickets in bulk
from the airline and sell at a mark-up. Very good value but do make sure that
they have ABTA IATA ATOL (right) bonding in case they go under.
Most 'respectable' High Street Travel
Agents actually book through consolidators.

I Lost My Heart to an Internet Floozie!
Most internet
based sites are either consolidators or buy tickets from consolidators.
Currently, this seems to be the best and cheapest. There is a need to check
with a number of sites such as Expedia, Kelkoo and Lastminute dot
com.
