Thirty two women in 'oldest profession' caught
by Kalinga Weerakkody(The Island 28-82002)
Thirty two prostitutes were arrested by the Special Crime Operation Unit (SCOU) in Mirihana police in four lightning raids conducted in four different places in Nugegoda and Maharagama areas.
OIC of SCOU Jayasiri Amarasinghe told ‘The Island’ that these women were arrested from four brothels run under the guise of massage clinics.
( Never before has anyone heard of such an 'ingenious' guise, at least not our 'kossas')
Of the four, three had been run by wealthy women. (The quintessential 'MADAME')

The first raid was carried out in ‘Keep Fit’ at No. 15, Pagoda Road, Stanley Thilakaratne Mawatha, Nugegoda, police arrested 10 women of ages between 19 and 30. This had been run for over about five years.
( Keeping Fit indeed! Guise did work for 5 years OR kappan stopped after 5 years. No prizes for guessing the correct answer.....or maybe it's the recent change of government)

The women are from Embilipitiya, Moneragala, Polonnaruwa, Matara. They had been earning about Rs. 10,000 per month and had boarded in areas such as Mt. Lavinia, Ratmalana, Borelesgamuwa and Pannipitiya. This place had been run by a woman.

Police had also arrested the manager of the centre and one customer had been released on humanitarian grounds.
( the 'one customer' could have been an off-duty OIC! or a politician?)
From the second place identified as ‘Sun Shine’ No. 173, Stanley Thilakaratne Mawatha, Nugegoda, police had arrested six women aged between 20 and 32. They had been boarded in Dehiwala, Angoda, Pothuhera and Kottawa. The manager of the centre had also been arrested by police.

Two school-leavers and one familied man were released after questioning. (Why were they not released on humanitarian grounds?) The owner is currently evading police arrest.

The third place was ‘Shenana Health Centre’ situated at No. 26, Old Kesbewa road, Kattiya Junction in Nugegoda. This place had been run by a woman for around five years. The girls had come from Aluthgama, Kadawatha, Piliyandala and Hingurakgoda. Police arrested five women from the said place.

From the fourth place namely Isuru Health Centre at No. 170/3 near the Teaching College at Maharagama police arrested 10 women. The OIC said that this place had been in operation for around six months and the woman owner of the place was currently evading police arrest. All the suspects were due to be produced before the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Investigations had revealed that many girls had been working in these brothels pretending that they were working at garment factories.
Some of them had previously worked in garment factories.

Two of our regulars sent us this story. The story was jazzed up by another correspondent.
