It is International Women's Day! ..."Mokakkda?" Asks R.M. Ranmenika

Spot the difference! (No competition!)

Women - no longer the 'decorative sex' by Aditha Dissanayake Sometimes called witches and bitches and condemned for being frail and frivolous, it was essential that women had a particular day each year to press for their demands. Especially so, because women were no longer associated with roses and sweets as they had been for Keats. They could no longer be dismissed with a "sugarplum". Nor could they be ignored as Oscar Wilde had done because he had seen them as a "decorative sex",

Today is International Women’s Day Our rural women will have to go a long way to secure their inalienable rights. (Picture by Kavindra Perera)

It is International Women's Day and that includes Ratnayaka Mudiyanselage Ranmenika (pronounced as Rum-Menika) of Godunna, a remote village near Ella.

Ranmenika is the dentally challenged female person and mother of eight (not to mention a half a dozen or so miscarriages at Badulla General Hospital) carrying her youngest offspring in the nearest pic. Incidentally, she is pregnant again! YUK! That's what power cuts do to normally sane men!
No! Ranmenika was never a female boxer! No! We don't have that sort of Californian vulgarity in SriLanka!
She probably had the shit beaten out of her by her husband R.D.Jamis!

As usual The Daily Noise of Srilanka (in a flattering immitation of The SCN) played to both sides!
Both pics appeared in the same issue of this publication.
Original captions are reproduced faithfully under each pic...
