Sri Lankan steals bus hoping to crush rebel chief COLOMBO, Aug. 27,
REUTERS (slightly abridged)
A Sri Lankan man stole a bus and drove at break-neck speed towards the country's northern war zone aiming to run over the reclusive leader of the Tamil guerrilla group battling the government, police said on Monday.
The man, identified as L. Piyasena, seized the empty bus outside the capital Colombo on Saturday and headed for the jungle hideout of rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, 250 km (155 miles) to the north.
But he did not get that far. Police in the town of Kurunegala shot out the tyres of the bus 80 km (50 miles) down the highway, but not before the man had sent a dozen vehicles careening off the road and smashed through the gate of a railway crossing. ''Sir, I am on my way to kill Prabhakaran, why did you stop me?'' local media quoted Piyasena as telling police when they arrested him.
Police said the man had a history of mental illness.

|Female Anatomy Sells Tea!|
The Island Friday 24th August, 2001 (opinion)
(abridged - Ed) It is most disappointing to see some advertisements on TV, presenting half truths and thereby misleading innocent people................Even though we as parents and grand parents could tolerate advertisements where many parts of the female anatomy is touched (sic! - Ed) before a particular brand of tea is being brewed, advertisements carrying half truths need serious concern as they affect human health and well being..........
